Despite Allah demanding they show fealty to Adam, a jinni (the singular for jinn) named Iblis viewed himself as superior to the human made of dirt. However, jinn have also earned their reputation for manipulation, mischief, and malevolence. Though possessing magical abilities, when they die they’ll face judgment for their sins. Within Islam, they are not inherently good nor evil, and can live a life of free will that involves eating for sustenance, getting married, having children, and observing social customs. “According to Middle Eastern lore, they are something in between, a third race of beings created by Allah.” “The jinn are neither angels nor demons,” said paranormal author and researcher David Weatherly, who writes about jinn in his book Strange Intruders. The word (meaning “to hide”) may be rooted in an Aramaic label for pagan deities that were downgraded to demon status, but Muhammad’s teachings said the jinn were created of smokeless fire.Īs opposed to angels, and existing long before Allah created Adam, the jinn were entirely separate entities. Although their precise beginnings are unclear, they are mentioned multiple times in the Quran. What we see in Aladdin doesn’t reflect the pre-Islamic Arabian origins of genies, or “jinn,” and “djinn,” which date back to at least 2400 BCE. But that’s not at all how things started for genies… Jafar’s fate in the animated film also suggests a human can be transformed into a genie. In modern entertainment, such as Disney’s new live-action Aladdin based on the 1992 animated film, genies are powerful beings trapped within a lamp, and relegated to granting wishes to masters. Like the song says, you ain’t never had a friend like a genie, but millennia of folklore suggest you probably will wish you didn’t. If you’re hoping to find a magic lamp containing an all-powerful genie, be careful what you wish for.ĭespite what Aladdin, I Dream of Jeannie or modern paranormal pop culture promise, tapping into phenomenal cosmic powers – contained in an itty-bitty living space – can lead to a world of hurt. I disconnected all other devices from the Arduino and left only the HC-05 Bluetooth module running. It showed that the Arduino receives the input from my APP (0, 1 etc.) and then after 30 seconds nothing comes up. I recorded the input on my computer with a simple program (see below). I have connected it correctly (TX->RX) to the Arduino. Ok, I have tried several things, but since I am a beginner I have so far gained more question marks than understanding.įor clarification regarding the TX / TX connections. The Bluetooth module continues to flash normally as if it is connected, but no further data is received by the Arduino. Then I can switch the lamp manually (on/off). The module switches from continuous blinking to receiving. I can connect the Arduino to the smartphone. The connection to my smartphone and the app with a HC-05 module is always breaking up. The change of modes and the manual control is done using a Bluetooth connection and a smartphone app. There are three modes available: Manual (on and off), switching according to the time, switching according to brightness. It should switch on at sunset and then switch off again at a certain time. I would like to remote control a lamp from an Arduino. Enter the COM on which your Arduino is on.I'm working on my first Arduino project and I've come across a problem with the Bluetooth connection that is unsolvable for me. MyPort = new Serial(this, "COM3", 9600) // My Arduino is on COM3. Depending upon the contents of the string the code will simulate the pressing of the appropriate keyboard key (if the string is "Up" it will press the UP key). (Remember that we simply want to read the data till " :" since we are sending the string followed by a colon from Arduino). The below "Processing" code basically reads the string which is sent by Arduino over serial port. So, for example, when the keyPress(VK_UP) method is called it would simulate the pressing of the up key (VK_UP is just the constant for the up arrow key). The code uses the Robot class which allows programmatic control of the keyboard. Processing is just java but doesn't need to be manually compiled and running it is also easier. Processing is used to actually simulate the pressing of a key. Now, we will talk about the "Processing" part. * with a colon when you want to simulate a keypress. *Add or subtract to the code for your application. Just have a colon at the end to make it easier to parse the string. Serial.println("Up:") //It doesn't matter what you print. This is because I had some trouble reading the string ending character in my Processing code and just chose this easy way to simply read until I get a " :". Note: You would notice that I am sending "Up :" instead of just "Up". How to modify the program is given in detail in the second last step, though it is actually very easy and may not really need the explanation. My program is going to simulate the pressing of the "UP" key when D12 push button is pressed and "DOWN" key when D11 push button is pressed. It needs to be modified to suit to your application. (The Processing code required is found in next section). And remember to place the switches in such a way that it is convenient to play. Repeat the connecting of the switches for all the buttons that you need. All you have to do is connect one terminal of the switch to +5V and the other terminal to a digital pin (for example D12) as well as GND through the pull down resistor. Readers can trust this source of information, as many people depend on the obituary to find out about members of their community that have passed. Obituaries printed in local newspapers can be seen by anyone that had a connection to the deceased. This permanent tribute becomes searchable online and often a part of genealogy databases such as. The obituary is a way to preserve their story. Unless you are famous, most people don’t have their life stories memorialized in print. It is a permanent record of someone’s existence. An obituary is more than just a notice of death. There are many reasons to place an obituary in the newspaper. Even after most newspapers become news websites, the obituary section will still be an important part of honoring who we’ve lost. The average age of print newspaper readers is 57.9 years, and those older adults often turn the page right to the obituary section. There are holdouts, however, that prefer the sound of rustling paper and look forward to the daily edition of the local newspaper. I want to support you, I want to pay you a fair price, but your economics and app make it impossible. Here is what the big wigs need to know: Instead of driving me to you, you’re driving me away. On top of the economics, the digital app remains horrid in so many ways, including intrusive advertising and stunningly poor usability. I don’t live in STL or the region, so I have specific interests: this case Cardinals, Blues, St Louis City FC … let me pay a fair price for these. (And is it a month or one time cost? I get confused.) I get digital editions of WaPost and NYT for much less. I pay for great journalism, local and national, and I want to support the hometown paper and its writers (particularly the great Derrick Goold) … but $26/month is insane. How many people have just walked away, taking their eyeballs with them? They won’t get $26/month from me for just one interest, and I wonder: Where do they make the most money? Digital subscriptions or advertising? They, obviously, want both. Update: Every time I stop by the app to see if it’s any better, if I can read even one story, I am reminded how horrible it is - and I think the paper loses another opportunity for me to add to their readership numbers, to improve their metrics, to see the advertising, and to support their writers by participating. An unsurpassed feat with words, which makes you go back and read a few lines time and again to experience those fleeting moments. The lucid writing by Katherine Rundell brings alive each and every element of the jungle. I had similar issues with scrolling in menus and such)Īll in all, the Wine client feels. I could zoom in and out only if I did large sweeping gestures to zoom me out a million miles or all the way into a first-person view, but I couldn't do smaller subtle adjustments to put the camera where I wanted it. (On top of that, trying to zoom in and out was a crapshoot at best. The keymapping was way off as well: the Control key worked the same as in the Cider client, but key combinations involving Option in the Cider client instead use Command in the Wine client, and, more critically, combinations using Command in the Cider client can't be done at all in the Wine client (so I couldn't, for example, combine enhancements, or bring up an info window for a power, or anything else that involves a right-click, since I only had a one-button mouse to work with). badly.Ĭhanging from fullscreen to windowed mode and back in the new client resizes the screen, which in turn moved all my in-game windows (chat, nav, map, etc) around, and I had to move them back every time I switched resolutions (which I did when I wanted to use other programs). In the old Cider client, going from fullscreen to windowed mode and back scales the screen instead of resizing it, so the in-game windows don't move around. While I was on vacation, I installed the 64-bit Wine client on a borrowed computer running 10.14. I'll re-post my first impressions of the Wineskin client (I've been using the Cider - aka Legacy or Safe Mode - client until now, and still am at home) and re-ask my question here, then: It will also (if I can get Developer ID to cooperate) be signed, so it will still launch after the unsigned Mac app cutoff of Feb 3rd. I might also decide to make the Wine version hackable in a limited fashion, but I don't want that to be automatic, because it will make finding issues more complex. The option to select another path will intentionally become less user-friendly to ease troubleshooting. I'm currently working on a new Island Rum release that will strongly encourage installation of everything inside the Applications folder - including Island Rum itself, and the game folder. The versions of wine inside the Wineskin app (1.6.2) or Cider (1.4) don't work in Catalina. Otherwise Island Rum will ignore it and launch one of the above.Ĭontrary to what Codeweavers or anyone else says, Wine 4.0.1 (the private Wine install) works with Catalina as long as you're launching 64-bit Windows apps - it does not launch 32-bit Windows apps. If you were previously using the Wineskin or Cider clients for Mac, you will have to delete "City of Heroes.app" and "CoH.app" from your Applications folder in order to use the private Wine installation. This is even more important when they weren't scheduling followup appts so I was totally dependant on their notices to manage my pets vaccinations.
